A mortgage is actually incredibly complex and yet people don't realize that and think complex financial instruments are bad.
Who’s saying that?
That complex financial instruments are bad, specifically for normal, responsible personal finance? I thought that was a mainstream view.
I haven’t seen that be a widespread point of view, but our circles differ. Actually never heard that take before.
I definitely got told that by many people here in the DT, and I'm not even a typical personal finance user.
I had no clue Gong Cha was a Taiwanese company. I just figured it was an American brand

Just noticed that most everyone not-australian pronounces Australia as if there's an extra i: austra**i**lia.
Swedes have no extra i
...the second A isn't supposed to be long?
https://dictionary.cambridge.org/pronunciation/english/australia suggests that pronouncing Australia with a long A is the British pronunciation while pronouncing "tral" as "trail" is the Americanized version of it.
Conscription per se is not illiberal. It can be necessary to avoid the free rider problem.
Just tax people a bit and pay for things. Ideally land value taxes.
Conscription by its very nature is illiberal. Unfortunately, liberal ideological purity doesn’t mean much when you’re living in South Korea and your neighbors drop a tank on your front lawn.
> liberal ideological purity doesn’t mean much when you’re living in South Korea and your neighbors drop a tank on your front lawn.
Or ever really
I think the counter to this is that democratic solutions to the free rider problem are themselves illiberal.

Inside you there are two wolves. Your internal organs rupture from the sudden appearance of two full-grown live wolves miraculously crammed into your thoracic cavity. You fall to the ground spasming in excruciating pain as the feral canines kick, scratch, and claw their way out of your midsection, their suffocating snouts goring through your trachea as the light begins to disappear from your bleeding eyes. It’s then that you remember that this is a meme.

I'm going to be so bold as to declare Andor unironically good so far. Obv. we're only 3/1 episodes in, so there's still plenty of time of for it to faceplant.
I don't know why a bunch of westerners are pretending that all Russian fighting age males are suddenly genuine refugees under international law. They're not.
Conscription is probably immoral but still practiced in several countries in Europe. It's still on the books in America. We wouldn't accept a Finnish draft dodger as a refugee in the US, and France is not obligated to accept a Taiwanese draft dodger's asylum claim.
The only difference here is that Russia is conducting an illegal war. But that has no bearing on the legality of conscription itself.
Furthermore, there is no guarantee that someone being conscripted is going to be sent to Ukraine. The vast majority of Russian soldiers aren't in Ukraine. If the presence of any risk of being ordered to commit crimes against peace is sufficient to make someone's asylum claim valid, then technically since all militaries may order that, all draft dodgers can claim to be asylum seekers, but that's not the case. Russian conscripts can claim that they've a higher chance of being ordered to into an illegal war, but then we're getting into made up international law territory where you're drawing a line at some probability of being ordered into an illegal war at some indeterminate time in the future. And that line is somewhere around 1/5 or 1/6.
As far as I know, no Russian soldier has fled and filed for asylum because they were afraid of persecution for refusing to carry out an illegal order. If they did, I'd be supportive of granting that.
The Russians who were arrested protesting have a stronger claim that they'd be persecuted for exercising the universally recognized right to free expression. But that's definitely not the issue at play here.
>If the presence of any risk of being ordered to commit crimes against peace is sufficient to make someone's asylum claim valid, then technically since all militaries may order that, all draft dodgers can claim to be asylum seekers, but that's not the case.

That's just not good faith arguing. This risk is obviously significantly higher than "technically possible" **if the cause of the draft is being currently engaged in a war of aggression**.

so? you are aware that this has to happen literally all the time, right? Nearly nothing in the real world is a matter of principle. It almost always is a matter of degree.
Take mandatory vaccinations. If the vaccines have a sufficiently small effect, it would be unconstitutional to force people to get them. But I don't see you objecting to mandatory vaccinations *in all cases*. But this necessarily means "drawing a line in the sand" somewhere. And what's the problem with that?
It is higher, but it's not high. The vast majority of Russian soldiers aren't deployed to Ukraine; the numbers vary between 15-20%. Of those deployed to Ukraine, even fewer are ordered to commit war crimes. While this might change in the future, an average conscript is far more likely than not to not be ordered into an illegal war.
> Conscription is probably immoral but still practiced in several countries in Europe. It's still on the books in America. We wouldn't accept a Finnish draft dodger as a refugee in the US, and France is not obligated to accept a Taiwanese draft dodger's asylum claim.
A large part of the recent asylum seekers and refugees from Eritrea are draft dodgers.
The same goes for Syria. Men who risk being drafted by Assad are likewise granted asylum.
>I don't know why a bunch of westerners are pretending that all Russian fighting age males are suddenly genuine refugees under international law.
Is anyone claiming this? There's an important distinction between "letting these Russian conscripts defect in large numbers would be geopolitically advantageous" and "Russian conscripts are genuine refugees."
Yes. Plenty of people are saying the Baltics are violating some imaginary law by not accepting Russian draft dodgers.
In regards to whether it would be advantageous that's a separate argument and not as clear cut as you would think. Historically, a large number of unwilling conscripts is generally not great for an army's morale.
I'm not arguing in favor of it.
In my estimation, Russian settlement in Eastern Ukraine is what caused this war in the first place. Ethnonationalism has a tendency to creep into ethnic populations beyond the borders of the home country--and then morph into calls for the home country to annex them (see: the entirety of the histories of Germany and the United States, and to a lesser extent Italy and Russia itself). The Baltic States should absolutely not allow any more Russians to settle there permanently.
Today's draft-dodgers are tomorrow's justification for wars of expansion.
However, I don't think it's a terrible idea to consider. The US already has large Russian-speaking immigrant populations, is powerful and distant enough to prevent any Russian expansionism, and effective enough at assimilation that even in the event of a catastrophic American relative decline, most ethnic Russians would be indistinguishable from other Americans, precluding Russian claims. Simply taking young people is debilitating enough for a country with as low a birth rate as Russia.
Again, the majority of Russian soldiers aren't deployed into Ukraine. 1/5 to 1/6 of them are. And very few of them are actually ordered to commit war crimes.
Many open borders advocates accept that fugitives of the law can be barred from entering a country or deported.
The goal is more to deny Russia men than to act humanitarian, although there's some of both.
Like those guys who fled to Canada during Vietnam, by doing so they were not fighting in Vietnam.
>I don't know why a bunch of westerners are pretending that all Russian fighting age males are suddenly genuine refugees under international law. They're not.
who cares. open borders
Open borders doesn't mean disregard national security.
Literally the argument made against all muslim refugees everywhere.
As it turns out, some arguments are valid for some circumstances but not others.

Sleep. Wake in the morning. Call with a member of the TFY board. He says the board did not authorize the former treasurer to shut down TFY Kharkiv. He says it doesn't make sense why they would want to shut it down. He says he will bring it up with the board. The old TFY guy who has been here says he was ordered to remove everything and lock the place up. I tell him the owner of the apartment said we could stay, but he says he doesn't care. He starts taking my belongings and says he will call someone to physically remove me. I pack my bags and go out to the stairwell. He locks the apartment and leaves. Sit in the stairwell with the other new TFY guy I came to Kharkiv with.
Something's not right. Stay safe
Thoughts and prayers.
On Russian Majority areas in the US that Russians could flee to, it seems like the Kenai Peninsula and Kodiak Island in Alaska would be decent, with a lot of the Orthodox sect known as the Old Believers well established there.
> The town was settled by a group of Old Believers of the Russian Orthodox Old-Rite Church around 1968, and remains a largely ethnic Russian town to this day.\[3\] The travels of the group from Russia, as well as the story of the founding of Nikolaevsk, is told in a 1972 article in National Geographic,\[4\] a 2013 episode on the NatGeo channel called "Red Alaska", and a 2013 article in The Atlantic magazine
In practice they'd just go to the Russian-speaking districts of NYC and Miami, but it's a nice thought if they really just want to stay in a small Russian village but also want to leave.
Old Believers are a very insular community like the Mennonites. Your average modern day Russian probably doesn’t have too much in common with them.
There's a decent Old Believer population in Siberia as well. Could be a niche person who needs it.
Also they're not loyal to Kirill, so there's that.
Yeah that’s pretty cool

Draft dodging an unjust war is incredibly brave.

Seriously, Everything Everywhere All at Once was such a good movie. It’s also the closest experience to being on LSD that I’ve found so far.
The closest experience I’ve found to being on lsd is the time I tried lsd. The closest experience to that is like a phone filter that makes everything wiggly
I’m willing to bet you didn’t take actual LSD. It’s pretty hard to synthesize and derivatives and other RCs are much easier to come by. Its not like recreational drugs are certified by anyone.

I think the meme that Europe has far less racism than America probably originates with the British attitudes towards slavery in the first half of the 19th century.
During that time, the UK was doing a lot to combat slavery and far ahead of the US in that realm. The US dealt with racial issues that the UK did not have\[specifically around Sub-Saharan Africans, not groups like the Irish\] for the next 150 or so years. Arguably it wasn't until very recently that the US caught up with the UK in this regard.
Then somehow Americans conflated the UK with Europe and now all Europeans are assumed to not have any racial resentment.
The Soviet Union likely also expanded this sentiment as they focused heavily on US Racial issues in their propaganda while acting like there was no racism whatsoever within the Eastern Bloc.
Yeah the anti-Muslim sentiment in mainland Europe is so blatant that it only takes a passing glance at the international headlines to knock the Europeans off their high horse
Problem is those headlines aren't in English
This all wrong. Euros are less racist than Americans because of olive oil 🙄🙄

The hobbits have been great. Missing from the last episode, I think, but this episode was encouraging.

Yeah idk why so many people dislike the Harfoots. They're my favorite part of the show.
I don't *dislike* the Hartfoots, I'm just not really invested into the scenes right now, though this last episode was better for them. Imagine the LotR films with too many scenes taking place in the Shire. Sure, it's nice and quaint but to me, (dunno about you), that'd be boring. And that's their problem right now. Boring. Boring with a promise of Gandalf.

I've just witnessed an American NAFO profile tell a Hungarian to stop Westplaining. I'm so tired. He was just saying that Russian draft dodgers have a valid asylum claim under EU law contrary to what Kaja Kallas said.
You just have to read lietuvis last Ukraine ping to see that happening right on this sub.
I didn't realize it was such a contentious topic here too when I posted this.
It's certainly a trip to see the same people who criticise anti-refugee groups in Europe copying their arguments when it comes to Russian men running from the mobilisation.
Especially when you consider how many of the current Syrian and Eritrean refugees asylum status rests on "risks getting drafted".
If a draft dodger is expected to commit war crimes in their army, they have a right to asylum. It's the main reason asylum is granted to Eritrean applicants.
The Baltics can't have it both ways. You can either deny the Russian army is barbaric or grant asylum.
If the discussion was that Estonia prefer that Russian refugees be sent further West because they are worried about internal stability or clashes with Ukrainian refugees, that's fine. But most of their politicians are just denying they have any right to asylum anywhere which is just wrong.
Nobody is expected to commit war crimes. Not committing crimes is the responsibility of individual soldiers.
The Russian army has plenty of war criminals, but obviously not all of them. And being conscripted into the Russian army isn't guarantee you'd even be deployed into an illegal war. Most Russian soldiers in the army aren't in Ukraine.
