Wait minecraft released an update 1.19.84 in which they ban slurs ? The trolling is just too on point.

thebowski

Did God sacrifice His Own Son or did God sacrifice Himself? Does Jesus pleading with the Father before dying mean that God sacrificed Himself without knowing He was gonna do it, or did the Father sacrifice the Son without the Son's foreknowledge? Just kick Him down to earth and kill Him? How are the three persons of the Trinity meaningfully different from three fully independent Gods? Since the Son is eternally begotten from the father, has it been shown to be wrong that the Spirit is Eternally Begotten of the Son and the Father is Eternally Begotten of the Spirit? Whats the difference between the "spirit" of God and the substance of God? (Considering that the three are identical in substance but the holy spirit is independent of the other two) What even is the holy spirit? Honestly the Muslim approach to Jesus is not so convoluted.

Libz_R_Gryffindor

Are you trolling and mocking the catholic approach to jesus?

thebowski

There is a fine line between trolling and inquiry. Its honestly confusing and I'd like to know more about their explanations for these things, but I'm incapable of sincerity.

cholo_chameleon

What *is* the Muslim approach to Jesus?

thebowski

Jesus is just a guy, who is also the Messiah and the final prophet. Technically Mohammad came later, but Jesus is still alive since he ascended directly to heaven, so he's still the last. Mohammad is the "seal" so none come after him.

Yes, multiples of ten.

HexagonOfVirtue

We have computers now, does it really matter? 4 decimal places for currency quotes is pretty reasonable. Worst case scenario, you just take a little longer to do it in your head. As long as the currency is a rational number, it’s doable. Irrational exchange rates or complex exchange rates would be… Hard.

[Your thoughts on the Constitutional Amendment for](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tea6F6qD5xQ) [an Indigenous Voice to Parliament?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_ZWBCDiS78) My gut reaction tells me the nature of our Constitution is procedural and rules-based, and not a Bill of Rights or some moral code to fossilise our society. And Indigenous people do have a voice to Parliament - the House of Representatives and the Senate, that they vote and elect, making this redundant. Not to mention from what I understand of this, it's also non-binding, so doubly redundant. !ping AUS

Sir-Matilda

Bad. It sounds like ATSIC but we can't pull the plug when it's revealed as a corrupt waste of money. Also Aboriginal Australians are overrepresented in the Senate right now. A voice to parliament is not the pressing issue.

SucculentMoisture

It’s not going to pass a referendum

Wehavecrashed

They're "represented" in a parliament that is constantly failing them. The first step towards fixing that is listening to them.

toms_face

It is good that you identify opposition as gut reaction, as that is what opposition to the proposal is based on. Aboriginal people do not have a voice to any parliament, they only have individual voices. None of the representatives that Aboriginal people vote for, nor the elected representatives who are themselves Aboriginal, represent Aboriginal people and nor should they particularly do so. If these representations were sufficient, there would not be such extensive disparity in social outcomes, so clearly they are not sufficient. This is essentially an attempt to revive the representative role of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) and prevent it from being undermined by governments. Aboriginal peoples and the Torres Strait Islanders constitute nations that are distinct to Australia and should be regarded as sovereign nations, though many of them are also Australians as well. Therefore, I hope that any advisory body also considers the views of each Aboriginal nation as well.

RTSBasebuilder

To that last paragraph with indigenous communities as sovereign nations, as entities (within the Commonwealth, I hope), defence, communications, etc. Policy still comes down to the Commonwealth Government, correct? What separates these separate sovereign nations from state or local government entities in duties?

toms_face

This would require legislation but ideally it would be a matter of an agreement between the respective Aboriginal nation and the state and federal governments to the division of powers, as is done in other countries such as the Native American territories in the United States. As nations are not the same as governments, they exist across and along governments, which confusingly are often called national governments. Australia is unusual in the world in that most people here are primarily Australian in nationality as defined culturally. Currently there is relatively little that Aboriginal nations have their own responsibilities for, mostly relating to common ownership of land under native title, but should be expanded to include a range of civic functions similar to local and state governments.

Professor-Reddit

It's a damn good idea and immeasurably symbolic and meaningful to the Indigenous leaders who have been pushing for it for years. The 3 clauses that will be asked in the referendum are perfectly acceptable and make it clear that this isn't a new parliament or a body that is outside the laws of Parliament, rather it is akin to an advisory council where concerns are heard. There's more to it than that, but its nothing that will distort the effectiveness of the Constitution whatsoever. We definitely need something like this. Existing government policy towards Indigenous Australians have been a failure. We've failed with a mixture of excessive paternalism and total indifference, and its clear that unless we have Indigenous Australians having a direct voice to Parliament and significant outreach from Canberra (with hugely symbolic and decently effective) Constitutional reform like this, then nothing much will change. It's also deeply important because it could be the beginning towards further reconciliation with a treaty. There will be those who scoff at all this symbolism, but we cannot become harmonious as a country if we continue to fail to reconcile our own past. These are the sort of reforms that *make* a country, not erode it.

waltsing0

I'd hope to be wrong but how is this different to any other Indigenous advisory group? If the problem is the government not listening how does this change? The problem is that (in theory) these sort of gestures can appear to do a lot without actually doing anything, so people think progress is being made, which the close the gap report disputes.

Professor-Reddit

Well for starters the body would be protected by the Constitution, which will additionally give it greater prestige. This would ensure it can't get undermined or simply shut down by Parliament which has happened in the past like with ATSIC. There are a number of Indigenous advisory boards out there which make recommendations all the time, but their actions are bureaucratic and rarely covered by the media. The whole idea behind this initiative is to unify Indigenous voices, which will massively amplify the audience to those who want to express their frustrations and advocacy. It's a smart idea considering the symbolism and importance wrapped around the whole proposal.

waltsing0

Sure it's slightly more prestigious but they can still just not listen > The whole idea behind this initiative is to unify Indigenous voices Ok how do you do this? Because Indigenous people aren't a homogenous group, you'll have to decide on some tradeoff between high consensus and actually pushing for something. This is probably the bigger issue, when you make it an official constitutional body then it needs to be properly representative, are there parallel elections with Indigenous people to vote and establish if the level of consensus is high enough to make a recommendation?

Professor-Reddit

> Ok how do you do this? Because Indigenous people aren't a homogenous group, you'll have to decide on some tradeoff between high consensus and actually pushing for something. This is more in the context of communication. The general public is more likely to be receptive to something if its advocated by a major or well regarded institution. For example when animal rescue services start advocating for more government assistance to save koalas during bushfires, people will be more likely to listen than if it was Greenpeace. Same goes with Indigenous issues. These organisations are ignored by the media, and a constitutionally protected voice to Parliament could make a huge difference even if the government simply tries to ignore it. These organisations will have a level of prestige that will make channelling of major concerns and advocacy a lot easier. > This is probably the bigger issue, when you make it an official constitutional body then it needs to be properly representative, are there parallel elections with Indigenous people to vote and establish if the level of consensus is high enough to make a recommendation? It's quite abundantly clear by this point that the Constitutional proposal makes no mention of a parallel Parliament, and indeed it expressively forbids it under the third clause. If you're referring merely to the elections of representatives, then its probably not as bad of a concern as there are a lot of existing Indigenous organisations which are pretty decent on matters like this with handling their own free and fair elections.

waltsing0

> This is more in the context of communication. The general public is more likely to be receptive to something if its advocated by a major or well regarded institution. For example when animal rescue services start advocating for more government assistance to save koalas during bushfires, people will be more likely to listen than if it was Greenpeace. I'm not disagreeing the body being official helps, but it's still capable of being ignored, being official could well help but I'd like to see precedent about whether it will do much. > It's quite abundantly clear by this point that the Constitutional proposal makes no mention of a parallel Parliament, and indeed it expressively forbids it under the third clause. If you're referring merely to the elections of representatives, So who decides who is on the body, what level of consensus is required to issue a view (ie. endorse a bill)? > then its probably not as bad of a concern as there are a lot of existing Indigenous organisations which are pretty decent on matters like this with handling their own free and fair elections. I think you're missing that once this is an official constitutional body *if you don't like it you can make your own group* doesn't apply, it has a monopoly on being the Indigenous voice to parliament. By your own argument this group will have more influence than the countless others, which means it's much higher stakes, ensuring it's truly represenative and not captured by special interests or a political class is critical.

Professor-Reddit

> but it's still capable of being ignored The point is that the concerns of Indigenous Australians will be a lot more difficult to ignore than the present situation. > So who decides who is on the body, what level of consensus is required to issue a view (ie. endorse a bill)? That is up to them to decide with the proposal they're working on. I'm sure there are plenty of resources and stories online over the years discussing this, I've seen some mentions on the ABC too. The process for deciding over this is not dissimilar to the Republic constitutional convention back in the late 90s, where many academics and public figures deliberated. > I think you're missing that once this is an official constitutional body if you don't like it you can make your own group doesn't apply, it has a monopoly on being the Indigenous voice to parliament. > By your own argument this group will have more influence than the countless others, which means it's much higher stakes, ensuring it's truly represenative and not captured by special interests or a political class is critical. I would agree, however I hardly think this isn't a terrible thing at all. We have government representatives at all levels and have high expectations for them. Why are we making it such a trifle merely over having a similar body of far less significant power for Indigenous Australians which they have been passionately pushing for decades over? In other words, if we're happy to take such a sacrifice with special interests in our current political system (and overall it works pretty decently), why are we so hesitant to expand that with a Voice to Parliament which won't have anywhere near the same legislative authority? I hardly think this is a mighty sacrifice (which Indigenous people must be vigilant with), especially when so many of them support this new body being created. Their elders, leaders, academics and public figures know what they are doing with advocating for this referendum and are fully cognizant with its implications and consequences, and we should support them.

waltsing0

> The point is that the concerns of Indigenous Australians will be a lot more difficult to ignore than the present situation. Yeah I always agreed this would have somewhat more bite but until I see precedent that this will be much harder to ignore I'm not banking on it mattering. Okay but who writes the "constitution" for forming the body? Yeah there's lots of ideas, that's not hard, but getting people to agree on which ones to run is. We have precedent of bodies meant to represent huge numbers of heterogenous people, they're called elections, they don't lead to consensus. For an advisory body you're probably wanting quite a strong level of consensus to get listened to, that's actually the real reason lobbyists and special interests get their way, if I represent a special interest group I as a representative can talk to a politician and explain how I have X number of voters who can have clear demands the politician can respond to. If anything we should be going in the other direction, acknowledging that high levels of consensus on solutions is unlikely, that we need to push through on a plan, for example there's very limited discussion about whether some remote communities are viable, when your town is in the middle of nowhere, no job prospects, isolated, limited services, it's pretty goddamn hard to close the gap.

Wehavecrashed

>Existing government policy towards Indigenous Australians have been a failure. Louder for the people not getting it.

Coz957

Indeed, the Australian Constitution is mostly rules based, and it describes the mechanisms of the Commonwealth of Australia. But the voice would be another mechanism. It isn't a right or a foundation, but rather a proposed part of the government. Now, whether you think that this is a good idea is another thing, but to criticise it for being out of place is incorrect, because it isn't.

RTSBasebuilder

I know, hence the second paragraph.

Speaking from personal experience - at least seven years. For me, those years happened from age 32 to 39. I was unable to walk more than a few hundred meters from home, even under ideal circumstances. It was normal for me to not leave home at all for months at a time. I missed weddings, Christmases, birthdays, etc. In May 2022, I did three spectacular weeks in Italy. Next month I'm doing a northern Ontario trip, and in November, I'm doing a destination wedding (friends, not family) in Cancun. Random chance, or at least probabilistic outcomes, create events, facts, and sequences that 99.9% of people can't help but to turn into a myopic narrative. Sometimes that's fine, often times it's not, and virtually never will that narrative be kept in a suspended collection of "what could have beens," and instead will be taken essentially as destiny.

Debate? Discussion? (I'm not entirely clear what it was. It didn't seem like question time but they were asking questions and getting responses) On the government's response to the foot and mouth outbreak. An opposition senator was using the time to make a wide variety of accusations against the Labor party. Labor loves the top end of town and hates young people. Basically saying a bunch of stuff that might discourage voters from electing the opposition, but the sort of stuff people don't really care about being said about the government. I thought it was a poor use of a question (a bit Bill Shorten esque actually.) But instead of using the incredibly broad scope of that question to talk up Labor's platform, talk a bit about super, a bit about big business, plans for the future, a bit about whatever else, and run out the clock on the question, the government senator got up and started lecturing the opposition on how to ask questions and listen to the answers. It was bizarre. Anyway. Best of luck to them all. I'm sure they'll figure it all out soon.

SucculentMoisture

Not really a surprise. Labor aren’t exactly used to being in government 😜

Wehavecrashed

Grogan, the senator who I'm referring to, filled a casual vacancy in 2021 and was a trade unionist before that. So she's very green. Labor might need to find some training wheels for her. Rennick, the liberal senator, has only been in the senate since 2019. Amazing they left the kids in charge.

SucculentMoisture

Rennick 🤮

From a quick look at Hansard, it was Questions without Notice.

Darn it. I took a 4 hour nap, so I don't feel very tired.

Not being tired is the worst ✊🏻😒🍦

Is there any worse feeling than reaching the latest page in a long-form webcomic and realizing that you’re going to have to wait like 6 fucking months between panels

S0ulWindow

When you find a random patreon post a few minutes later that says they are taking an extended break on top of the normal six month wait.

They are deaf, that's why they need to play music so loud

MrOstrichman

I can’t think of any other reason. It’s legitimately louder than my headphones and I’m not even in the same building.

simeoncolemiles

Take: Player sexual is better than orientation for romancable characters in a game. Because 90% of the time it’s either that or 2 characters anyone who isn’t a straight person can romance !Ping Gaming

OkVariety6275

I don’t understand why everyone wants to have sex with video game characters.

gnomesvh

The only reason why my character in GTA has ever had sex is to get the "sexual acts purchased" stat up to 69 because I'm immature

simeoncolemiles

I’m not here for the sex, I’m here for the role play of being in a relationship cause I’m not in one 😎

uss_wstar

My issue with playersexual is that it just elevates low quality writing when it comes to romance. Not that defined orientations guarantees good writing but playersexual just embraces it as relationship dynamics are completely different between different pairings. Also, most games are terrible at romance in general, what you get is often a few scenes with a character and then maybe you get a sex scene and that's it, and even if you've never had an irl relationship is so ridiculous it borders on parody. If we're going for playersexual, may as well take the extra step and remove romance altogether instead of the current cringe fest.

simeoncolemiles

I feel like Dragon Age 2 did it ok, like I’m fine with orientations for characters if all of them are fleshed out but I’m not a fan of it when the choices are “Fleshed out characters for straight people” and “Hey he likes men/she likes women. Go bang”

uss_wstar

> “Hey he likes men/she likes women. Go bang” Least unrealistic depiction of gay people in media !ping ALPHABET-MAFIA

Vythan

In theory I support romanceable characters with distinct orientations, but in practice I generally don’t think developers are likely to put equal time and effort into same-gender romance options as they do into opposite-gender pairings, so I prefer playersexual.

uss_wstar

I can't think of a good straight romance in video games either. I mean there is Haven but apparently a game that attempted to present relationship dynamics between two people who have been in love with each other for a long time felt like a gut punch to a lot of people (although this is more of an endorsement).

Vythan

I mean yeah, video game romances kinda universally suck. Most of them feel juvenile and shallow, and have an overemphasis on building up to a sex scene more than building towards interesting character development or relationship dynamics. That being said, if an RPG focuses on player choice and then makes it clear the straight players’ options have had way more effort put into them, it’s hard not to be at least a little annoyed that you got the worse set of fantasy make believe options. Granted this is part of why I’ve kinda given up on CRPGs in favor of TTRPGs - tabletop games give me a lot more freedom to play the characters and settings I want to.

I don’t know if I almost had a panic attack or a seizure this evening. I have had a very, very recent history of seizures from stress/sleep deprivation (or both) but like…can you get yourself out of having a seizure?

>It is brilliant american literature and i don’t care what anybody it is it should be taught in schools \- Freddie Prinze Jr. on the topic of Scooby Doo , circa 2002

gggregory

Why does Boy Scouts have such an obsession with native culture?

YehosafatLakhaz

Baden-Powell based a lot of early imagery and concepts on the Zulu that he encountered fighting in South Africa because he respected them a lot as fellow warriors. The American Scouts then ended up recreating a lot of this but with Native Americans instead of the Zulu. It helped that one of the BSA's founders, Ernest Thompson Seton, was really into Native culture. Fun fact: Another founder, Daniel Carter Beard, was a major early Georgist.

Russia supposedly countered the Griner/Whelan for Viktor Bout deal with the addition of Vadim Krasikov for their side, an FSB assassin who is now serving life in prison for gunning down a Chechen in Germany in broad daylight.

I wonder if Russia is capable of negotiating in good faith with the US, like, gaslighting and lying is their MO, but like, they know we can make them hurt if we want right?

Been looking for a new job lately, sent out 10 applications so far and haven’t heard back from any yet. Haven’t really been on the market like this before, is this normal? Is it supposed to be a numbers game and I should be sending even more?
