“We must have a future.”
Adler trades her wife for a nation
Which is interesting, because didn't she ask Raven to burn down Krakoa if Xavier didn't let them be together? I wonder what changed.
That’s the thing though: Destiny **never** said the reason she needed to be brought back was so her and Raven could be together. All Destiny told Raven was to bring her back no matter the cost or burn it all down.
Assumingely, “burn it all down” means Raven killing all Mutant Kind which would reset the time line. Destiny knows Raven would gladly go to those lengths and extremes due to their love. So it’s an easy and seemingly innocent request of her to make to Raven.
If Raven failed to bring Destiny back somehow than everyone dies/everything resets again and Destiny gets to keep trying until Raven does what she did to bring Destiny back.
Destiny is using their relationship and Raven’s unwavering trust in her against Raven. It’s an insanely shitty thing to do but it’s a “needs of the many outweigh the need of the few” situation But on a quite literal universal scale.
They are both horrible people and to see their directions opposed is such a good hook. Raven will do anything for Irene. Irene would do anything for her people. Love unreciprocated or not shared entirely is the height of drama. It’s a very smart beat to have for these characters which is entirely in line with their characterization this far.
It may not be death for Raven even, could be Raven sees Adler doesn’t love her as she thought and they split
One of the possibilities that immediately came to mind is they end up voting on if Mystique should be exiled or not for all the shit she’s pulled with Destiney being the deciding vote. which is when she betrays Mystique by voting for her exile.
And by an ironic twist, Sinister resets the timeline to save Mystique and have her on his side? What a world
>“needs of the many out way the need of the few”
Likely just autocorrect error, but the phrase is "...outweigh the need..."
Thanks Mr. Actually. Glad that was your one take away from it all. No. It wasn’t auto correct. It’s the fact it’s 2am and I’m tired. But here I am still awake while talking to nerds about super powered lesbians and proper grammar.
It's r/comicsbooks. That's what we do.
It's a flaw of mine, for sure. Go get some sleep :)
They kicked off the original writer, that’s what changed.
Pretty sure Hickman stepped down of his own accord.
Way to not know what the fuck you’re talking about
She will burn the Multiverse down to cosmic ashes to save Mystique!
Also she didn’t know until now that the Possible Futures are without Raven!
The OverFlow of Future Info is happening simultaneously to the Quiet Council’s Meeting, after the Info Dump she appears bringing the “Good News” of the Big Crossover “Judgement Day”
Irene is playing 4D Chess while Sinister is just playing around with his “New Toy” (poor Moira)
And I think that the build up of this Story will have a Resolution in the Past and not in the Alternate Futures!
In the First Issue we see a meeting in the Past between Destiny and Sinister, I bet that Irene will do something to change the Past to save Mystique! Hell I’ll be surprised if she doesn’t go trying to make a Deal with a Young Moira before she activate her X-Gene!
doesnt it seem kinda out of character for nathaniel to not even suspect the future seer might notice whats going on just... by virtue of him knowing a lot about everyones powers and whatnot?
Him figuring it out does involve a lot of him connecting the dots and also being willing to admit to himself that Irene can *also* connect those same dots. I suspect the second half is where his blind spot on it is.
i mean, even if today irene kept things under wrap, what are the chances that in none of the timelines, this ever became apparent at all? no timelines sinister ever suspects that anyone might be on to him at all?
It's odd seeing Irene so young. She used to be quite old
When Mystique revived her she specifically brought her back young.
> “I… I… feel younger than I should be.”
> “Yes. You’re the age you were when we first met. It’s my welcome back gift. For *both* of us.”
extremely superficial if you ask me
For perspective: If you had to be brought back from the dead to live again would you rather do it in your young and healthy 25yo body or the decrepit, aching, slow, failing 95yo body that you died in, permanently feeling like each breath was the last one you’d ever taken in your first life?
No, but I once drove through Prince George and we crossed a street called “lehmon” or something and for the past 12 years my family always says “lemon” in a stupid voice ever since.
I don’t recommend living in Prince George unless you REALLY like the smell of pulp mills.
considering they also have all these plants to fix you up way past 100, i'd probably want to be the one making that decision myself, not have it be sold as a 'gift' (at least she was honest about it also being for her) by the shapeshifter who probably could have pretended to age along with me at some point, but never did, and who, as far as comic book pages are concerned, kinda doesn't want to seriously make out with me in my technically natural state or something
Eh, she had the chance to bring her dead wife back and opted to make her young and hot. Don’t blame her for taking it.
Also would kinda be a dick move to bring her back for eternity and make her all old and frail, forever.
it's not like she couldn't have brought her back at her normal age and healthy (they have that technology now) and let her chose if she wants to come back actually young as soon she dies, as mutants tend to do.
or maybe, if irene actually would've wanted raven to be old with her, for example.
or for both of them to be somewhere in the milfy inbetween.
Every issue of both Immortal X-Men and X-Men Red has been incredible so far, really glad we've got both Gillen and Ewing leading the charge in this new phase of the Krakoa era
Marauders is my personal favorite for just fan reasons, but I’ll freely admit Immortal and Red are the objectively best books.
Marauders is great! From what I'm reading:
1. Immortal & Red (tie)
2. New Mutants
Not reading Knights and X Force due to the size of my pull list, but the whole line is incredibly strong at the minute and long may it continue!
I did not know destiny was wearing a helmet.
Why is she young now? She was interesting as pretty much the only geriatric villainess in comics but now she's just another hot chick.
Mystique brought her back young, as a present for “both of them.”
Also while having her be elderly did make her interesting, I can also see both Mystique’s personal desires “oh I can have my wife back and also have her young and hot again” as well as it being kind of a dick move to bring her back and say “hey you’re effectively immortal now and you’re gonna be a frail old lady *forever*.“
Mystique petitioned and requested that the Five produce a younger body for Irene upon her resurrection.
It's all good, bro. Sure they made Destiny young but they also introduced Hordeculture, they're kinda like the evil version of the Golden Girls. And they're hilarious.
Because hot lesbian action is more marketable when everyone is young.
> I support gay marriage as long as both chicks are hot
Was Destiny ever really a villain though? She's always struck me more as somebody who just really loved a villain in Mystique rather than being a villain in her own right.
Right? I assumed it was some kind of skintight mask this whole time.
It varies immensely in what it actually is. In another scene *in this same era* it's a mask with a soft hood instead of this hard helmet
See, I thought it was just her face. I don’t know why I did, but I just assumed she was like android lady. Maybe because she remind be of Maria from Metropolis?
I don't get it , could someone explain what this potentially means ?
None of her current future visions/prophecies have Mystique in them - meaning she’s very likely to potentially die sooner rather than later.
Die...or get stuck in the ground next to Sabertooth
Karma from the sound of things
I don't think Xi'an is involved. ;)
1) I love Raven and Destiny. I only saw flickers of it during the Claremont run and Irene was well into old age by that point so I didn't really get a chance to see her and Raven at the height of their passion. But seeing Mystique, a character known for her duplicitous acts and nonstop secrets and agendas, love this woman so completely and unconditionally is so heartwarming.
2) Destiny is the only person that can ever rival DC's Raven in terms of thigh game.
That's rough, buddy
Ow. My heart.
Seriously, though, this issue might be one of the best single issues I've read all year. Finally, the love between Mystique and Destiny has been allowed to fully blossom. This is a relationship Marvel has only been able to hint at coyly for years. I remember Chris Claremont saying he had always intended this relationship to be deeper. Now, there's no more coded language. These two have a love that spans decades and multiple deaths. And now, they're together again. But those last pages...damn.
Beautifully written. And just in time for Pride Month, no less. So fitting. 😊
I’m just waiting for someone to pull the trigger and say Azazel’s been lying and that Mystique and Destiny are actually Kurt’s parents.
…likely followed by a bunch of people who’ve never actually read comics suddenly becoming *extremely* concerned about how this ruins Kurt and how big fans they definitely always were of Azazel.
This is so (bitter)sweet.
After the events of "Inferno," I find it very difficult to feel bad for either Destiny or Mystique, but Gillen is getting pretty close
But wasn't Destiny and Mystique right in Inferno, with Moira hiding her plan to betray mutantkind and be absorbed by the technarchy?
it seemed like she was super down with mutant utopia forever until they brought back the one mutant she understandably didn't want at the party and that mutant instantly went for revenge instead of being like 'sorry sister, guess you're doing good after all'.
like, before the machines did a time travel and changed the timeline, she did exactly what she promised, didn't she?
Timeline 10^a worked the way they wanted it, but 10^b being influenced by Omega disrupted the series of events enough that Moira fell back into her cure plan. She needed Destiny off the board so she could complete it, since the escalation with Orchis seemed to lead to another inevitable extinction.
Remember that Moira herself doesn’t know about 10^a , so she’s convinced they always lose and doesn’t know if she stayed the course it would have *worked*.
I don’t think Moira was even down with Mutant utopia. Ever since life 2, she’s been constructing a smokescreen to hide her true desire: cure/ eradicate the x-gene
If she eradicated the mutant gene, then cool, all she's done is change the evil robot who rules the future from Nimrod to Ultron. They really should revisit the concepts behind "Age of Ultron" as a building block for rapprochement between the X-Men and the Avengers, because at the end of the day, the ultimate bad guys are the machines, not mutants or humans.
Damn I need to read AoU
You really don't. It's terribly executed, there's just a couple interesting ideas a better writer could have done something cool with.
But her whole reason for not wanting destiny back is because she’s the only person who can know what she will do at the end of time
I agree with you though that for a while, the lazy writing made it seem like Moira didn’t want destiny for my reason other than pettiness from being burned in her second / third life, and destiny/mystique didn’t say outright that they were hunting her down because of her betrayal until issue 5 of x of death, like two months after the negative feedback from those books
The thing that always stood out to me was that Moira always said "no precogs", not "no Destiny." We inferred, somewhat correctly, that she was referring to her more than anyone else, but it was always couched in the idea that they didn't want a mutant who could see the future because then the jig would be up that there IS no future. It being a Destiny/Moira issue was part of it, but it was not the exclusive reason.
Oh ok , thank you very much.
the ending page. reminds me of something my late gram said to me if i was out of the house (if a hurricane hit).
i will post it if anyone wants to hear it. if i get any replies this.
I'd like to hear it.
Don't come for me.
She was in her 90s
She live in tornado Alley. When she was a kid and young adults.
Live thru a few tornadoes going over a tornado shelter .
If it risk my life to get to her.
Damn. Thank you for sharing that.
Who is the other girl? Looks like DC’s Raven
It’s Mystique and her wife Destiny aka Irene Adler
Jesus this is heartbreaking
The art really sells it. Beautiful spread of Irene on that last page.
I love Kieron Gillen. If I wanted to start reading Immortal X-men and understanding the plot, how far back in the X-men story would I have to go? Skimming through wikipedia indicates maybe House of X?
Yeah. Assuming you know the basics of who the characters are, you could start with House of X/Powers of X and be good.
Yeah, I know the X-men from the movies and a few comics, of course. I just got confused by all the Krakoa stuff I saw when I started to google.
Yeah. That's where the Krakoa stuff starts with really no lead-up. Soft reboot basically.
Definitely House of X/Powers of X. Then probably Hickman’s run on X-Men, since that has relevant issues and story, then Inferno as the barest minimum so far.
Thanks X-Men Expert!
such a drama queen.
Yep. When she strutted into the chambers post her debilitating vision, and is like “war is coming.” … no shit, Irene.
