Not "many". A subset of academic surgical residencies require it. Others allow/support it. But it's also not a secret. If you just want to be a practicing general surgeon (or basically any subspecialty besides pediatrics or surf onc), it's not necessary.
That’s a very serious undertaking. I’m not the person to give advice on it. Would definitely be easier to find a partner track job somewhere or take over an existing practice in a smaller town.
lowest i’ve seen is 325 starting for academic surg onc
each promotion (associate assistant then full professor) is like 60-70k increase
chair of dept easily clearing 600
chair of surgery closer to 1mil
(large East Coast city)

Last I saw MGMA had general surgery at 440k a year with private practice in my region.
Can you start your own practice after residency?
