i think at this point Diana is probing Jacks mind to discern what is going on inside of him. This is her walking through the corridors of his mind to find the red door, past the red tendrils, and the origin of the voice.

StrumGently

Oooooh, I was wondering how they were going to introduce Deanna…this makes perfect sense!!!

[deleted]

As much as I can discern from her facial expression, and the hazy corridors in the background, seems to support this idea. It also just makes a lot of sense. Who else is going to get inside his mind and figure out what's going on?

AnAngryPlatypus

Well, if they wait till Wednesday Worf could do it, but that’s really a FUBAR style way to get inside his mind.

evemeatay

Biggest problem is it’s only works once

phildeland

Oh snap that's a great take! I like it.

RikersleftTesticle

Ah makes sense, this is her face after finding his favourite posts on 4chan.

ziplock9000

She's not a Vulcan, so she can't do that.

JamesTheMannequin

Definitely, she can. She's shown it multiple times in show and movies. She's more powerful than she or her mother ever let on.

ziplock9000

When has she done it when it's not been under unusual circumstances like her mother (another empath) or a psychic reman?

JamesTheMannequin

I can't imagine what circumstances feel like to someone like that. "Unusual" is the very essence of Trek.

ziplock9000

Unusual for what is normal for in-universe. It's not rocket science. I can only remember her ever doing this with other empathic or psychic characters. Jack is neither

JamesTheMannequin

I'm sorry, mate. It's just completely feasible within universe. You don't agree, and that's cool. I hope it doesn't turn you off to this season.

Left_Boysenberry6902

Night terrors! “One moon circles…”

ExpectedBehaviour

Only with other telepaths though. She's an empath, not a full telepath in her own right.

JamesTheMannequin

Not in Riker's case. From the first episode she could project her thoughts into Riker's mind. Stands to reason she could do it with others. I'm not saying it's not a plot device. I'm just saying she can.

ExpectedBehaviour

Only because of the intense emotional bond she’d shared with Riker over a number of years; and that might have involved Riker doing some Betazoid mental training of his own. That’s where the Betazoid word *imzadi* comes from.

JamesTheMannequin

That's true, and again I'm not saying it's not a plot device, but she's been more than capable throughout her career in Starfleet.

ExpectedBehaviour

But it’s not *more than capable*. It’s *capable only with telepaths of her mother’s species and one other person with whom she shares a remarkable emotional bond*. This is hardly “Spock telepathically communing with a giant antimatter cloud creature or sensing V’Ger approach from light years away or transferring a copy of his mind at a touch” territory. It’s a remarkably rudimentary implementation of telepathy even given what we see elsewhere in *Star Trek*.

AngeloftheSouthWind

Empathy and Telepaths that master their crafts, are indistinguishable from one another. Look at T’Rina and Book, Michael and Sarak. That mind meld is exactly what it feels like when two people traveling in astral collide into one another’s minds. I’m sure I’m going to here shit about referencing Disco, but I stand behind it! I love that fucking Mushroom Drive! It’s definitely a study on GenZ, and I heard them through Discovery. It had good moments.

jdbythebay

It seems someone is speaking to jack telepathically…

GuyWithTheGoods

Of course she can. She entered Lwaxana's mind in "Dark Page." Betazoid's are just as powerful telepaths as Vulcans and even with 1/2 the genetics, she's a force.

ziplock9000

That was her mother and both were empathic. Not the same.

GuyWithTheGoods

Still wrong. Even ignoring that Lwaxana is a full telepath, Deanna's been shown to be able to do it in other situations.

ExpectedBehaviour

YallaHammer

Is Troi in the Shrike? I thought people saw a clip of her onboard the Shrike saying something to the effect of "there's a darkness here"

plotdavis

There's a scene of her talking with Riker where it looks like they're both on the shrike.

YallaHammer

Is it the same/similar background? (I haven't seen it myself.)

plotdavis

Not really but this pic does look like the shrike

GreatBarrier86

You know…I wonder if they somehow commandeer the Shrike. They’re sorta just chilling there in what appears to be the aft part of the bridge. I wonder if they’ve taken it over by that point. They don’t SEEM confined.

Theblondeone007

Yeah, this scene and the one of her and Riker where she says there's darkness on the ship look like they're on the shrike. Plus in one of the promos, they're both on the bridge of the shrike arguing so yeah lol

Theory: Certain doom but we're looking at Deanna but it's actually Riker. A lot of folks were concerned because in that shot in the trailer there is a flash of light in this scene. We've been told that "no one is safe" in this season and I've seen some folks postulate that Troi is about to get blown up. I think that would be a cruel fate. Will is finally progressing in his grief for Thaddeus and to add Deanna's loss to that, plus his now having to raise Kestra alone is too much for our guy Number One. What if Riker has to sacrifice himself and he's the one in that hallway? By this point, Troi has joined everyone on the ship and she links with Will to be with him in his final moments. In episode 4 we learn that Deanna hasn't felt anything from Will in a long time. We have his story arc of getting back in touch with himself and his sense of wonder at the cosmos. He is processing his grief and digging into deep emotions about family. We see this in his conversations with Picard about Jack. I suspect we'll see more as he reunites with more of his Enterprise family. His arc could arguably be coming to an endpoint. He even got to captain the Titan again. I can see a situation where someone has to give it all and Riker goes. Deanna is with him telepathically at the end. She is able to feel his grief, loss, and regret but also gratitude, love for her and the kids, and pride in his duty and career. I'm just spitballing. I hope it isn't so. But if we lose one of the OG TNG (besides, you know, Ro) I think Riker makes the most sense. Thanks for reading!

sandgroper933

\>> She is able to feel his grief, loss, and regret but also gratitude PLEASE NO! NOT GRATITUDE! Trigger warning for her "amazing" powers shown in the pilot episode GREAT JOY.... AND GRATITUDE (sound of dry retching)

Truth. As a older Betazoid AND half human her abilities are growing. She fought off Shinzon's attack. Don't underestimate Troi. She's afraid. I just hope she isn't under attack.

DEATH. It's been said many times before. And I'm already dreading the huge cry I'm going to have when it happens. Probably my favorite character from TNG. Though much of that is due to Marina's amazing personality and the way she is during interviews et cetera. I would love even more of Marina's character in Troy.
