I've always thought of this... is it written as Brasil or Brazil?
Some places write it as Brasil, and others as Brazil, although Brazil is written more often
"Brasil" is the name in Portuguese (the language of Brasil). "Brazil" is the English name.

It's strange. I know some Spanish, and from that I can understand a bit of written Portuguese... but when I hear it spoken, I don't understand a damn thing.
Yeah the speeching part is very different from Spanish.
I'm from Brazil and depending on the accent, I can't either.
I wonder why we say Z in English. Wouldn’t be easier just to keep it the same?
It used to be called BraZil here, too, until a language reform in the.... 18th? 19th? Century changed it here (prolly to keep it in line with the origin of the name : "Brasa", wich means Ember), so most countries with other languages just kept the original spelling.
Oh interesting!!! TIL, thank you!
in my country it's Brazylia (Poland)
(Thats just english)

American gun collectors call the Finnish submachine gun kp/31 simply a "Suomi".
It's the rough equivalent of calling an M16 an "America" and it's a silly habit but it persists.
It is the official name actually :D [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suomi_KP/-31](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suomi_KP/-31)
(That's one of the *six* Suomi words I know!)
That's one of them! :D

Jūsų šiauriniai kaimynai
Since depending on region you live in and culture you practice, you may be more used to other alternative names. I am listing them as well.
- From vedas and most prominent among natives: *Bharat*
- From greek: *India*
- From persians: *Hindustan*
To add to your explanation:
The river "Sindhu" which in English is "Indus"
Sindhu ---> Hindu (in Persian as they couldn't pronounce the S) ---> Indus (in English/Greek as they couldn't pronounce the H)
That's how the "hindustan" came in Persian --> which means "land of hindus"
And the word "India" came from the English version of the river which is "Indus"
Also, basically "Hindu" is an ethinicity of people living on the land near the river "Hindu" or basically Sindhu. Since most of these people practiced "sanatan dharma" the word "hindu" became synonyms of people who believed in "sanatan dharma" way of living. (Point of note: it's actually a way of living and not a religion per say)

I always wonder how it becomes Japan or Giappone in other languages. The N is so different from J/G!
I assume Japan is from Zipangu, which was on the world map in Europe in 1500s. It was located far east side of the map. But the map is too messed up comparing the real world so we can’t be sure any longer but it’s like far eastern island.
J'ai du scroller pour le trouver
Je pensais qu'il y allait y avoir doublon pourtant.
Noreg is also an official name.
I'm American married to a Maori fella. I still can't say anything in Maori properly.

Russian conjugates nouns, including proper names. So, you'd say Ya lyublyu RossiyU.
Ah yes. Thank you! I’m still learning and there’s a lot to remember haha
Don't feel bad. Russian grammar is a massive pain in the ass. Even native speakers screw up all the time.
Most people pronounce our name as “SING-a-pore”, but locals pronounce it more like “Sing-GA-pore”
Hey there fellow Swiss friend!
Danmark. Means the field of the Danes.
Schweiz, Suisse, Svizzera, Svizra. (Can slightly vary depending on the dialects)

In other Arabic languages it's pronounced Mesr
भारत, हिंदुस्तान, आर्यावर्त,
I think Aryavarat was the ancient name for North India specifically, not india as a whole
Éire for just the country name, no?
Then 'Éireann' for "of Ireland" (Poblacht na hÉireann) and 'Éirinn' for "in Ireland" (labhraítear Gaeilge in Éirinn).
I was always thought in school that it's either Eire or Poblacht na hÉireann but not just Éireann
Its been 20 years since I was in school and Irish teachers I had could never agree.
Just make sure to always remember the fada!
Éire = Ireland
Eire = Burden
*rødgrød med fløde intensifies*
France... that's kinda lame to not have our own special version of the name :(
